Summary:  The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability is looking for two UC Berkeley students to serve as the Green Labs Research Associate.  The Associates will assist the CACS Green Labs Task Force with researching current and potential sustainable lab practices in UC Berkeley labs.  These are paid positions at $10-15/hour, with 5-10 hours per week available for fall 2012 and spring 2013, with a total of 100-150 hours available.

Job Responsibilities: 

·         Compile information on the types of labs present at UC Berkeley

·         Research current and potential sustainable lab practices

·         Research green lab vendor information

·         Assist with the formation of a green labs working group

·         Plan a green labs vendor fair 

·         Compiling relevant case studies from other institutions of higher education

·         Making recommendations for any follow-up work or activities to the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability (CACS)

Qualifications:

·         Be a student currently enrolled at UC Berkeley (required)

·         Is comfortable doing independent work, is detail-oriented, and is interested and knowledgeable about sustainability

·         Is a self-starter who needs minimal guidance

·         Has excellent research and writing skills

·         Has an interest in or experience with sustainability and environmental issues

·         Can commit to working both Fall and Spring semesters

The purpose of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability (CACS), which first met in October 2003, is to promote environmental management and sustainable development at UC Berkeley. The Committee is charged with advising the Chancellor on matters pertaining to the environment and sustainability as it directly relates to the University of California, Berkeley. To fulfill this obligation, CACS draws strength from its diverse composition of faculty, staff, students and alumni.

The mission of the Committee is composed of three central goals:

·         To engage the campus in an ongoing dialogue about reaching environmental sustainability

·         To integrate environmental sustainability with existing campus programs in education, research, operations, and public service

·         To instill a culture of sustainable long-range planning and forward-thinking design
